SOCIAL JUSTICE CONSULTANTS, LLC
Embracing Change --- A New Voice

Bruce E. Smail - Chief Executive Officer & Founder
Washington, DC

Bruce E. Smail is pleased to launch his dream, a consulting company aimed at creating change in the areas of Social Justice, Diversity, HIV/AIDS, and LGBTQ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, questioning) issues. With over 19 years of experience in higher education, nonprofit, federal government, and secondary education; Smail’s dedication to social justice is driving the passion for this Washington, DC based limited liability company.

Smail served as the Chief Executive Officer of the Virgin Islands Community AIDS Resource & Education, Inc. (VICARE) from September 2005 – September 2008. VICARE is the largest HIV/AIDS non-profit organization in the Virgin Islands with three federal grants totally over $4 million supporting nine major programs and three smaller foundation/donor grants supporting youth programs. One of the federal grants, Housing Opportunities for People with HIV/AIDS, is territory-wide with offices on St. Croix and St. Thomas. The opportunity to lead an HIV/AIDS organization on islands that are silent around sexuality and HIV/AIDS issues was an interesting challenge as well as an opportunity to draw on numerous skills honed through 19 years of experience in higher education, federal government, non-profit and secondary education.

Smail’s higher education and non-profit experiences have been centered on advocating for diversity and specifically addressing issues and concerns of people of color and the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender (LGBT) communities. With opportunities to address diversity on several levels as a graduate student, program coordinator, and program director, and chief executive officer; Smail held diversity positions at University of Colorado at Boulder, Indiana University at Bloomington, Colorado State University, and Boston University.

As a bisexual, person of color, living with HIV, and raised in the Caribbean, Smail has been passionate about addressing multiple dimensions of identity and finding ways to value all parts of one's identity. Furthermore, he advocates for silenced voices in organizations and creates spaces for those voices to emerge. Smail strongly believes that the issue of HIV/AIDS is complex and must address the multiple layers of culture, sexuality, and sexual identity to be effective in reducing the spread of HIV.
