Social Justice Education

We believe that social justice education is both a process and a goal. The goal of social justice education is full and equal participation of all groups in a society that is mutually shaped to meet their needs. Social justice includes a vision of society in which the distribution of resources is equitable and all members are physically and psychologically safe and secure. We envision a society in which individuals are both self-determining (able to develop their full capacities), and interdependent (capable of interacting democratically with others). Social justice involves social actors who have a sense of their own agency as well as a sense of social responsibility toward and with others and the society as a whole (Bell, 1997, p. 1).

About the Seminar

The demographic growth of the Virgin Islands is forcing change in the territory. Is the Virgin Islands ready and prepared for these changes? What communities are included and excluded in the Virgin Islands? To what degree has the VI Constitutional Convention question the Virgin Islands’ commitment to diversity? Is there a common ground for involving all aspects of diversity in the Virgin Islands? These questions provide a small glimpse of the challenges of diversity and social justice in the Virgin Islands.

  • This two-day seminar is open to all participants interested in becoming stronger allies and advocates for social justice. The seminar will focus on three key areas:
  • Theoretical & Conceptual Frameworks of Social Justice
  • Relevance of Social Justice in the Virgin Islands
